目前,國內用于玉米粉碎的主要機型是臥式錘片粉碎機。該機型盡管優點較多,但其缺點也比較突出,這就是能量消耗大、生產率不高的問題。為解決這些問題,多年來,在設計上也采取了不少改進措施,如加大篩板包角、設計水滴形粉碎室、設計偏心粉碎室、加強輔助吸風等,這些措施雖也有一定效果,但受臥式錘片粉碎機整體結構的限制,難以有明顯的成效。另外，還有齒爪式粉碎機、立式粉碎機、水滴型粉碎機，齒爪式粉碎機其結構緊湊，體積小，可靠性高，但能耗大，對粉碎多種物料的適應性差；立式粉碎機生產率高，能耗低，無需吸風，換篩方便，有效地干擾或破壞了粉碎室內的氣物環流層，避免了重復無效的過度粉碎，但結構復雜，價格昂貴，顆粒大小的分級困難，不適合于普通的場合；水滴型粉碎機粉碎室呈水滴型，粉碎效率高，能耗小，但結構復雜，體積大，制造加工難，工藝復雜；揉搓式粉碎機采用動定齒盤，依靠動定齒盤之間的相對的高速運動，使被粉碎物受齒盤揉搓、沖擊，剪切，摩擦及物料彼此間沖擊等綜合作用，來粉碎物料。
